  Well, our first piece of business of the summer is complete, and though we only expect a few arrivals – it certainly isn’t the last! As the contract situation looks to be clearing, with Khan reportedly having agreed a deal, McMahon and his staff can put focus, energy and resources into new incomings. A deal done… So, as I say, the announcement of striker Josh Walker from Barnet has got the ball rolling – another player who John Still has identified as a gem that can help the squad back to the football league. Now say what you want about that man, he certainly has an eye for talent, as we saw when he was in the dugout and most recently with the likes of Saidou Khan (set to renew his deal at Dagenham & Redbridge). Taking a closer look at the new recruit, he netted just once last season, injuries impeding his ability to get out on the pitch. The Squad: In Depth

  Today sees the return to the pitch for McMahon’s men (albeit for a maximum of 45 minutes for each player) as they continue to ramp up their efforts ahead of the opening day clash at Stockport. Braintree Town are the opposition in the first friendly, but I want to focus on ourselves (as that’s what pre-season is all about after all) and the squad we have - which Daryl McMahon seems to be pretty content with. We’ve brought in two new faces and largely succeeded in the primary aim of retaining our players whose contracts were set to expire. However, one player we didn’t manage to hold onto was Saidou Khan, leaving for Chesterfield, the one that got away… That’s an overview of a summer which has been pleasing for supporters with huge contract extensions and only a couple of frustrations in between.   Despite the unpredictability of such encounters, here is how myself and Shrimpers supporter Ryan see the game going, with plenty of build-up for you to enjoy below… A huge game, two rivals meeting competitively for the first time in years, for the first time outside of league football and a game that has added significance due to the managerial situation at Southend. These are the sort of games where the league table and current form; it all goes out of the window, the occasion takes hold, and it is who turns up on the day. However, hints at who will turn up on the day can be sought from the recent performances and ultimately, the personnel – man for man – who has the better chance? The Daggers have had a rough(er) time of it of late compared to their flying start which saw them unbeaten in 6 games (winning 5 of them).
