DAGENHAM AND MATT
This is the twelfth instalment of the ‘DAGENHAM AND ME’ series in which we explore fans’ and former players’ relationship with the club. This will be done over the Christmas period with interesting stories being told daily and debates will no doubt spark over Dagenham’s Ultimate XI! Behind door number 12 is supporter, MATT, enjoy :)
My favourite player currently is Will Wright - the right back who can fill in at centre back - has impressed me with his improvement from last season.
I attend every single game home and away, on Match days at Victoria Road I am situated in the Carling Stand - I get the supporters coach to away games. I assist Russell with the Supporters coach travel which runs for almost every Daggers fixture.
I have supported the club for two decades with my first game being against Canvey in the Essex Cup final. However it is not my favourite game, I have chosen three games including ones against Aldershot, Rotherham and Exeter. The Aldershot game is up there as one of the best as a 2-1 victory won us the conference at Victoria Road- a great match.
As for the Rotherham game, well it goes without saying it was a terrific day for the club, as we reached the third tier of English football with a 3-2 win at Wembley! I also enjoyed the Second round replay in the FA Cup against Exeter where we came out 3-0 winners in 2001. This set us on the road to The Valley: almost 19 years ago now.
The best Christmas game I have witnessed is more recent and was a fantastic comeback victory over local rivals Orient. Nunn’s winner will live long in the memory of every Dagger - an incredible Boxing Day! From Christmas game to song and it is now a classic - Mariah Carey, All I want for Christmas is you.
Not much has changed since I began supporting at the turn of the century as I still love the club as much as I did back then.
My favourite man to take charge in the Daggers dugout will have to be John Still, purely for what he achieved in his spells at the club. He took the Daggers to new heights by reaching League one via the playoffs back in 2010.
Still also got to Round 3 of the FA Cup with Dagenham and that goes down as my favourite away day - at Goodison. To face Premier League opposition at a historic ground was special - a great day out regardless of the result.
My favourite players who all feature in my Ultimate XI are Tony Roberts and Mark Janney - just great servants as well as players. Also Mark Stein was one of my favourites, he played for Chelsea and his quality showed why - a great striker.
Here is my Ultimate Daggers XI:
