DAGENHAM AND RICH
This is the third instalment of the ‘DAGENHAM AND ME’ series in which we explore fans’ and former players’ relationship with the club. This will be done over the Christmas period with interesting stories being told daily and debates will no doubt spark over Dagenham’s Ultimate XI! Behind door number 3 is supporter, RICH, enjoy :)
FULL NAME: Richard Gibbins.
Currently my favourite players are Angelo Balanta, Clark and Elliot Justham - the fantastic spine of the team.
I have been a season ticket holder for many years and I go to every game where I always stand by the halfway line under the Sieve.
I first went in 1977, my earliest memory being a 1-0 defeat to Enfield who were the best team around then.
A relation to the club that not many have is that my Uncle used to be the treasurer of Dagenham in the 60’s so he got me into them. When I was young, we literally used to travel the country to watch them.
My favourite game is fairly recent and arguably the biggest the club has had so I have got to say the play off final against Rotherham. There have been many cracking games over the years but that has got to be it - big day at Wembley.
My favourite Christmas game is even more recent and happily fresh in the minds of many Daggers - when we beat Orient with Nunny’s late winner. Staying on the Christmas theme and my favourite Christmas song will have to be ‘Stop the cavalry’ by Jona Lewie.
Well since I first went I’ve now got 2 daughters and tried taking them a few times to Victoria Road but they just got bored. To be honest from when I first started going, to now, it’s unbelievable just how much more professional everything is!
For me the best manager is easily Ted Hardy for me; absolutely took no prisoners and commanded respect off his players and staff. In terms of my favourite player, it’s a very tough decision but would have to go for Jason broom purely for his will to win.
My best away day as a Dagger was a Cup game away to Newport, Isle of Wight.i think we won 4-1 got so drunk ,what a day.
Now this took ages but I eventually went for this 4-3-3...
My 5 subs would be Elliot Justham, Tony Pamphlett, Peter Gain, Mark Stein and Angelo Balanta.
