DAGENHAM AND PAUL
This is the twenty fourth instalment of the ‘DAGENHAM AND ME’ series in which we explore fans’ and former players’ relationship with the club. This will be done over the Christmas period with interesting stories being told daily and debate will no doubt spark over Dagenham’s all-time XI! Behind door number 24 is former player, PAUL COBB, enjoy :)
Full name Paul Cobb
I played for the Daggers from 1997 - 2001 after joining from Purfleet. My preferred number before squad numbers was eight and I was a Centre Forward.
My debut came against Carshalton but I don’t remember too much about it to be fair. What I do remember is that I didn’t finish the game and not due to injury!
My favourite games are in no particular order Charlton in the FA Cup in 2001 as it goes without saying it was a fantastic day for the club - a big occasion. Secondly, Peterborough away in ‘97 - also in the FA Cup. Finally, Harrow Borough at home in 99 when I scored my only hat trick!
As it’s Christmas I was asked for my favourite Christmas song and it is definitely Fairytale of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty McColl.
I still have a very good relationship with the club. I still get over to games when I can and if there is anything I can do to help the club - then they only ever need to ask.
My favourite Daggers managers are Ted Hardy who brought me to the club and Garry Hill who helped me and the side win the league!
My favourite player to have played with was Paul Cavell and it wasnt even at Dagenham. Scored my most goals in a season the one campaign I played with him and he taught me so much in that time.
I only played against him in a charity game but Glenn Hoddle was an unbelievable player to have played against - a legend.
The best away day was without a doubt Hampton and Richmond, the day we won the league, a great occasion!
Life after Dagenham consists of a job as an Asbestos Surveyor and still kicking a ball around in the lower leagues of the Essex Saturday Veterans League.
But if I had to sum up my time at the Daggers in three words they would be: An Absolute Pleasure
My Favourite Goal was my second in the Harrow hat trick game. Picked the ball up on the left hand side, cut inside along the edge of the penalty area (virtually to the right hand side of it) and reversed a chip back to the far post.
Here is my Ultimate Daggers XI, I played with some great players during my time at the club:
Proper side. Proper team mates.
Thanks for reading,
That was ‘DAGENHAM AND PAUL’
